John Bayley (1925-2015) was a prolific British literary critic whose pieces generally appeared in the New York Review of Books. The Power of Delight is a wide-ranging collection of various essays drawn from across his career, edited and selected by Leo Carey. The pieces on Russian writers — Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Ivan Bunin — are the strongest parts of the book.
