Ian Stewart tries to do too much in Why Beauty is Truth, as he attempts to explain the entire history of mathematics as well as profile several of the key early discoverers in the field. And while Stewart is an engaging writer with entertaining stories to tell about famous mathematicians, the book’s actual review of symmetry is too tangential.
