White Girls

Hilton Als's White Girls (2013) seems to me a far superior book to his earlier acclaimed novel The Women (1996). Als’s writing has improved considerably, and while his attempts to draw broader conclusions on race and gender are sometimes forced and predictable, his biographical essays (many of them published previously in The New Yorker) are minor masterpieces.
