The Pequod Review:

John Buchan's The Thirty-Nine Steps is a fast and adventurous espionage novel about a mining engineer (Richard Hannay) who finds himself on the run after being accused of murdering an American spy. Some of the best sections recall Eric Ambler, even if the overall narrative has less depth. The book was made into a 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock.
