State of Fear is one of Michael Crichton's most overtly political novels, one that imagines a group of eco-terrorists who cynically attempt to create natural disasters to further their environmentalist cause. The agenda-driven nature of the narrative hangs over every scene and detracts from an otherwise fast-paced thriller.
