John Grisham's first novel outside the legal thriller genre is one of his most well-regarded, the story of a 1950s Southern family struggling to survive as cotton farmers. But the great strength of Grisham's legal thrillers is his plotting and suspense, and without these elements his workmanlike prose is not enough to carry the book.
