The Other

The Pequod Review:
Perhaps because it straddles the lines between serious fiction, mystery, and horror, Thomas Tryon's The Other has almost totally disappeared from memory, despite its enormous popularity at the time of release. This is a shame since the book is a well-written and atmospheric psychological drama, involving an evil twin brother whose innocent pranks take a darker turn. Similar to Stephen King, some of the best sections of the book capture the insularity and secrecy of small-town New England. And the ending is a ripper, one that redeems the somewhat languorous build-up.
