The Midwich Cuckoos

The Midwich Cuckoos seems to me a far more subtle and persuasive book than John Wyndham’s more famous novels. The book is the sci-fi/horror story of an English village where the citizens fall into a day-long trance, and upon awakening discover that all of the woman of child-bearing age have been impregnated. The narrative is thrilling and intense, as it realistically captures the horror such a discovery would evoke, as well as the conflicting feelings when strange and hyper-intelligent children emerge from the women’s wombs. Highly recommended.
