Halo in Blood

The Pequod Review:
Published in 1946, Halo in Blood is the first novel in Howard Browne's Paul Pine private investigator stories. The book is written under the pen name of John Evans, and the story is a hardboiled noir centered on Pine's investigation into the suspicious fiance of a wealthy client's step-daughter. The plot is a bit too complex and full of several implausible twists, but Browne is an engaging writer in the tradition of Raymond Chandler. ("You could have hung a lantern on his chin, but not without his permission.")
