The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory

Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe is a very good introduction to string theory (the proposition that vibrating loops of stuff are what ultimately drive activity at the smallest molecular level). The book is intelligent and extremely well-written, but given the inconclusive evidence (to date), it ultimately feels too narrow and speculative.
