Boggs: A Comedy of Values
Rating
The Pequod Review:
J.S.G. Boggs is an artist who makes highly-realistic drawings of currency notes, and proceeds to spend them. Practical-minded people may call this counterfeiting, but Boggs believes his creations are art, and that even “the transaction itself is the art object.” Weschler uses Boggs’s simple story to explore deeper questions about the nature of money and value (for example, the true victim of his counterfeiting is hard to identify given that Weschler’s drawings sell for more at auction than the original currency notes themselves).
