Mordecai Richler hit his stride with his fourth book, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, a coming-of-age novel in which the protagonist (Duddy) tries to scheme and hustle his way out of poverty. There are moments of humor that recall Mark Twain at his best.
