The Pequod Review:
John Steinbeck’s final novel is one of his worst-plotted and most curmudgeonly, as he laments the immorality of modern America. Which is a shame since Steinbeck has become a much stronger writer and his best descriptive scenes have remarkable power. For all of its faults, this is in many ways Steinbeck’s most underrated book.
