The Volcano Lover

The Volcano Lover, Susan Sontag’s third full-length book, is a romantic historical novel set in 18th century Naples based on the love affair between Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton. Unfortunately, the book feels more like a collection of intellectual observations and historical anecdotes than a proper novel. But her observations are quite perceptive and even intense.
