The Vodi

In John Braine's The Vodi, the protagonist (Dick Corvey) lies in a TB sanitarium where he recalls his past misfortunes (which he attributes to a boyhood fantasy involving an imaginary race of creatures who inflict bad luck). Braine's characterization is weak, but the story builds to deep themes of masculinity, willpower, success and sexual status.
