Adam Begley's Updike is an exceptionally well-researched biography, with interesting anecdotes on almost every page. Begley quotes large sections of Updike’s work, and locates key events in his life in relation to what he was writing at the time; it’s remarkable the extent to which most literary biographies don’t do this.
