A Time to Kill

John Grisham's first book, A Time to Kill, is the story of a small-town Mississippi lawyer appointed to defend a black man accused of murdering two white supremacists after they raped his daughter. The characters are cliched in a black-and-white way, but the plot is gripping and persuasive.
