In Sunlight and In Shadow

Mark Helprin's In Sunlight and In Shadow is another novel set in New York City, the same location as his highly accomplished Winter’s Tale (1983). However, this book’s plot is more conventional and the setting is smaller, which lessens the impact of his soaring prose. Perhaps rather than criticize this book, we should instead more fully appreciate Helprin’s earlier achievement.
