The Pequod Review:

Anita Brookner’s first novel, A Start in Life, is the fictional biography of Ruth Weiss, a professor of French literature who specializes in Balzac. “Dr. Weiss, at forty, knew that her life had been ruined by literature.” Not a lot happens in the book, but Brookner is an excellent writer who creates complex characters.
