The Simple Art of Murder

The Simple Art of Murder is a collection of short stories written by Raymond Chandler during the 1920s and 1930s mostly for Black Mask, as well as his seminal essay on detective fiction (available online). The short story format simply doesn’t work for Chandler; the strengths of his writing are his characters and atmosphere, not plots, and these are better developed in novel form.
