The Pequod Review:

Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes novel is more of the same — a satisfactory murder mystery, a convoluted narrative, and a flashback to the murderer’s past. But in this book, the Victorian London setting and the charming atmosphere of 221B Baker Street are more fully developed. The novel also features the first appearance of Mary Morstan, a client who would eventually marry Watson.
