Purple America

Like The Ice Storm (1994), Purple America takes place in suburban Connecticut over primarily one night. This time, it involves a middle-aged son who returns home to care for his ailing mother after his stepfather abandons her. Moody’s book is more a collection of excellent individual scenes (primarily focused on each character’s interior thoughts) than a cohesive novel. But the scenes are sharp and perceptive.
