Play It As It Lays

Joan Didion’s second novel Play It As It Lays features a number of very good impressionistic scenes, as well as extremely observant prose. But the unfocused plot (which follows the nihilistic adventures of 36-year-old Maria Wyeth) coupled with the intensity of the protagonist’s mental breakdown make for an unsettling and sometimes unpleasant reading experience.
