The Pit: A Story of Chicago (The Epic of the Wheat)

Frank Norris's seventh novel, The Pit, awkwardly joins two story lines: (i) a simplistic and moralizing critique of certain aggressive forms of capitalism, as embodied by the wheat trading pits at the Chicago Board of Trade; and (ii) a very good love story that would have made for a more successful novel on its own.
