The Pequod Review:

Herman Melville’s seventh book, Pierre, is one of his weakest, the story an adolescent boy’s psychological and sexual development while living under the thumb of his overbearing mother. Melville remains an incredibly talented writer, and the book is hardly devoid of merit, but this radical shift inward is less successful than his more capacious novels.
