Jerry Stahl's memoir Permanent Midnight presents a story of drug addiction that has been told many times — one where his need for drugs spirals out of control to the point that it threatens his job, his family, and his health. But Stahl is a pretty good writer and there is an undercurrent of sadness and desperation beneath the surface-level humor.
