The 1990s and 2000s saw a wave of Japanese crime noirs, most of which were too self-consciously imitative of their American predecessors. Natsuo Kirino's Out is perhaps one of the better of them, as a woman murders her abusive husband in self-defense and enlists the help of her friends to dispose of the body.
