Notes from Underground

Notes from Underground was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky as a polemic against the emerging rationalism of the period — and specifically Chernyshevsky’s philosophy of “rational egoism” — rather than as a novel per se. So perhaps it should not be a surprise that it does not always make for great literature.
