Neon Metropolis: How Las Vegas Started the Twenty-First Century

The Pequod Review:
Hal Rothman's Neon Metropolis is one of the best books on the rapid and immense growth of Las Vegas from a desert stopover town to a vital American city. Rothman covers not just the city's political and economic history, but also the natural history of the region — a crucial factor as the desert landscape provided developers with a blank canvas, and the city’s isolation (and early insignificance) allowed gambling and other enterprises to flourish unregulated.
