The Pequod Review:
In Misery, a famous author (Paul Sheldon) is seriously injured in a car accident, but is rescued from a snowdrift and nursed back to health by his “number one fan” Annie Wilkes. This is one of King’s most memorable books, with a thrilling narrative that also explores the life of a writer, the artistic tension between popular success and creative individualism, the perils of fame, the dangers of drug addition (which King knew well), and the unhealthy side of celebrity fandom. And the novel is even more gruesome and claustrophobic than the very good 1990 Rob Reiner film.
