The Lowland

The Lowland, Jhumpa Lahiri's second novel, follows two West Bengali brothers whose lives take very different paths -- one immigrating to America to pursue a successful academic career, and the other drifting toward radical communism. While I enjoyed Lahiri's earlier short stories, her narrative too often becomes cliched and earnest when stretched to novel-length.
