The Pequod Review:

John Barth’s fifth book, Lost in the Funhouse, is an intermittently brilliant collection of 14 short stories. The highlights are the title story (probably the best thing Barth would ever write) and the Sherwood Anderson-style “Water-Message.” While many of the remaining entries are gimmicky or pretentious, these two stories alone make the book essential reading.
