Sergio De la Pava’s third novel (Lost Empress) begins at Chapter 88 and counts down to Chapter 0, along the way telling a meandering story involving a variety of subplots (a replacement professional football league, emergency medicine, theoretical physics, and more). The edges of his writing have been polished off, and the result is oddly bland.
