The Pequod Review:

Gil Brewer's sixth novel features a down-and-out ex-cop (Steve Logan) who gets swept up into frightening scenes of violence and terror after he helps save a stranger's life. There are elements of a great novel here — and Logan is a very well-developed character — but Brewer's dialogue and plotting are rough and unfinished. Better to start with The Red Scarf (1958) instead.
