Tom Wolfe builds on the theme of teenage promiscuity he explored four years earlier (“Hooking Up”) with I Am Charlotte Simmons, a novel that centers on the social lives of students at a prestigious but basketball-obsessed university. Wolfe’s writing has never been more lifeless or unconvincing, although there are some interesting secondary characters.
