Herself Surprised

Joyce Cary's ninth novel Herself Surprised is a character study of Sara Monday, a well-meaning housekeeper who makes a series of life-altering mistakes. The story is a decent one but the more interesting characters are the secondary ones (the artist Gulley Jimson and the wealthy art collector Mr. Hickson) and they appear less frequently than Sara.
