The Pequod Review:

Heretics, a four-part epic, is on the surface an entertaining historical thriller about a stolen Rembrandt and the Jewish diaspora. But it has deep themes as it explores heresy in several forms — the loss of faith in Castro and the Cuban Revolution, and the repudiation of key elements of traditional religious faiths. The book drags at times over its 500+ pages, and has a number of unlikely plot developments, but overall its international sweep across key 20th century historical events carries it through to a highly satisfactory conclusion.
