The Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is far and away Nelson DeMille’s finest book. DeMille creates a first-rate character in John Sutter, whose successful but boring life as a tax lawyer on the Gold Coast of northern Long Island is disrupted when a Mafia boss moves in next door. The other characters are nowhere near as well-developed, but the book is carried by John’s sarcasm and wit, as well as intelligent plot twists involving plausible tax avoidance strategies. This is popular fiction of very high quality.
