The Pequod Review:

Stieg Larsson’s first book in his Millennium Trilogy is an entertaining mystery novel, one that follows a financial journalist (Mikael Blomkvist) and a brilliant 24-year-old tattooed computer hacker (Lisbeth Salander) as they investigate the disappearance of a wealthy industrialist’s niece. It must be said that Larsson is not a great writer — blunt and utilitarian — and his character development leaves much to be desired. (For these reasons, coupled with his immense popularity, Larsson has earned the scorn of higher-brow literary critics.) But The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a solid thriller and its best parts (especially the middle third of the book) develop enough narrative suspense to easily overcome its flaws. Recommended.
