The Forever War

Dexter Filkins's The Forever War is an on-the-ground account of the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The book is too micro and it fails to pull the details together into a thematic whole, but it's useful if you want to understand what actual day-to-day life is like for American soldiers.
