The Pequod Review:

Herbjorg Wassmo's fifth novel, Dina's Book, is a sweeping epic set in the mid-1800s that traces the life of Dina, a young girl living in Northern Norway who at age five accidentally causes the death of her mother and is banished by her father to be raised by a poor cotter's family. Dina tries to piece her life together but remains haunted by both her mother's death and later tragedies. The narrative is sometimes melodramatic, but Dina is a powerful and dark character. (The book was adapted for the 2002 film I Am Dina directed by Ole Bornedal.)
