The Pequod Review:

A minor classic of upper-middle-class ennui, Desperate Characters traces the loveless marriage of a successful but quietly miserable middle-aged Brooklyn Heights couple. Paula Fox’s prose is alternately clunky and enchanting, and the book is too episodic, but the best scenes show the fragility that underlies our modern life. The book was made into a 1971 film by Frank Gilroy.
