The Pequod Review:
Tim Powers's Declare is a very good historical fantasy novel, this time a secret history of the Cold War as told through a British agent (Andrew Hale) who is assigned to penetrate the Soviet spy network. Powers incorporates real life figures (Kim Philby, T.E. Lawrence, etc.) into his fictional story, which combines elements of espionage, science fiction, theology and fantasy. The book's plot is labyrinthine, and some readers may find the mix of fact and fiction a little incongruous, but others (especially fans of Neal Stephenson or the Illuminatus Trilogy) will probably like it a lot.
