Black Music of Two Worlds

The Pequod Review:
John Storm Roberts played a vital role in introducing Latin and African music to Western audiences through his 1980s and 1990s Original Music mail-order record label. The best way to appreciate Roberts is to listen to some of these recordings (Richard Henderson has a good overview), but Roberts also wrote this interesting survey of African music. The best parts of the book trace the ways that Western music borrowed specific elements and structures from African tribal songs.
