Alain Mabanckou's eleventh full-length novel is the coming-of-age story of a young Congolese boy during key moments in the Congo's recent history. The book has several vivid scenes, but the plot is undeveloped; I prefer the detailed insights of his memoir instead (The Lights of Pointe-Noire, 2013).
