The Big Screen is David Thomson’s attempt to pull together the history of modern cinema into a comprehensive work of narrative non-fiction. But this is too broad of a topic, and Thomson’s observational style doesn’t fit neatly into a linear narrative. Better instead to read his superior reference guides (The New Biographical Dictionary of Film and Have You Seen…?).
