Alfred Doblin's Weimar Era novel Berlin Alexanderplatz is much less readable if you haven't already seen Fassbinder's film adaptation (a true masterpiece). And make sure to read the 2018 Michael Hoffman translation for NYRB Classics, a meaningful improvement over earlier translations.
