Beneath the Underdog: His World as Composed by Mingus

The Pequod Review:
Beneath the Underdog is ostensibly a memoir of Charles Mingus’s life, but it leans heavily toward his sexual conquests and lifestyle rather than his music, and much of it seems exaggerated. Perhaps the same insecurities that led Mingus to write this enormous piece of self-mythology also helped him create such extraordinary music.
